The HREC Application
Please use the above internal Northern Territory Department of Health and Menzies School of Health Research (HREC) application form for all applications where ethics approval is not required from other States or Territories.
Please note: AUDITS – If there is an intention to publish the findings or results of the audit, please use the HREC application form. If unsure or in doubt, please use this form. In an event where interesting or important data or information surfaces from the findings of the audit that warrants publishing; it is a condition of certain journals that ethics approval have been sought.
The NEAF Application
NEAF applications should be submitted if research projects require ethics approval from another jurisdiction or the research is considered to be a multi site study. Proposed studies sited in Central Australia will require a NEAF application. You are required to download the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research NEAF Appendix.
Please respond to EACH of the 6 core values of Responsibility, Reciprocity, Respect, Equality, Survival and Protection and Spirit and Integrity. You are asked to demonstrate how this/your research study will be of benefit or have an impact upon Indigenous peoples and their communities. Please refer to NH&MRC document "Values and Ethics: Guidelines for Ethical Conduct in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research”. This document must be attached to your NEAF application as an Appendix.
Please note that the HREC NEAF reference number to use in all communications is EC00153 and the official name of HREC is The Human Research Ethics Committee of the NT Department of Health and Menzies School of Health Research.
Please Note: If the methodology or protocol of the research study proposal is not clear from the NEAF application form, it is suggested that a separate protocol/methodology be submitted as an appendix the research ethics application.

Quality Audit Assurance Registration (QAAR)
Please note: AUDITS – This form is for audits. It grants ethics registration and not ethics approval. The Human Research Ethics Committee of the Northern Territory Department of Health and Menzies School of Health Research cannot grant ethics approval retrospectively under any circumstances on ethical grounds. If in doubt or unsure as to whether there is an intention to publish, please use HREC application form.
