Menzies wins grant to further research and education

21 January 2011

The Menzies School of Health Research has received $10,000 in funding to enable students to engage in qualitative data research.

Menzies Senior Lecturer Dr Suzanne Belton says the grant will benefit the health workers and researchers that Menzies educates and trains.

Menzies was one of only twelve universities worldwide that received funding for the qualitative data analysis tool NVIVO 9, which assists with managing and analysing data.

“NVIVO 9 software training will enable Menzies students, namely people working in the fields of Indigenous, remote and tropical health, to apply qualitative research to their work.

“We hope the training will help attract students, clinician and researchers with an interest in using this software to improve their analytical skills,” Dr Belton said.

Menzies has a strong, ongoing commitment to continuing professional education and lifelong learning and offers a diverse range of short courses, an award-winning Master of Public Health, a Professional Doctorate in Health, and Masters or PhD by research.

Qualitative Research Methods will be offered in second semester in 2011 and interested participants can email education@menzies.edu.au or phone (08) 8922 7953

The grant highlights the success of Menzies education program which over the past decade has developed a range of courses focused on the changing needs of the communities in which Menzies works.

The other universities to receive funding were Curtin University in Australia, the University of Stirling and University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, the University of Cape Town in South Africa and Mutah University in Jordan, Claremont Graduate University, Texas Tech University, and Florida State University in the US, and the University of Alberta in Canada.
