DILI 12 september 2024 (TATOLI)- Menzies School of Health Research and the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Forestry (MALFF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen the control for livestock in Timor-Leste.
Menzies chief of Operating officer, Chris Pearce said the renewed agreement aimed to further strengthen antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and Antimicrobial Use (AMU) surveillance in the animal health sector and promote a One Health approach for controlling brucellosis and other zoonotic diseases in Timor-Leste.
“We are signing this agreement to renew and threaten control for animals which will most be affected to the human body. We also working together to strengthen and enhance skill in epidemiology and AMR Surveillance,’’ Menzies chief of Operating officer, Chris Pearce told Journalists after signing the MoU, in Menzies office, Lecidere, tuesday.
The MoU outlines the ongoing capacity-building support MALFF and Menzies will continue to provide the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL).
Secretary of State of MALFF for Livestock, José Viera De Araújo said this renewed agreement with Manzies is very important to enhance the capacity control for livestock and also fisheries.
“This partnership is useful to help on controlling animal diseases Timor-Leste and also support identifying animal disease through testing in a laboratory,’’ He said
It required ensuring proper treatment for the animal if diagnosed with any animal diseases. The treatment must be prioritized to avoid spreading the disease and also will not affect to human body.
Meanwhile, There are currently 3 one Health Projects underway in the partnership:
– The Fleming Fund Country Grant to Timor-Leste (Since 2019)
– Brucellosis Reduction Using Co-Design Elements In Timor-Leste (NRUCE-TL) project 2022
– Bacteria Enteropathy and Nutrition (BEN) Study (Commencing September 2023.
