Scabies affects >200 million people worldwide each year. This parasitic skin infection disproportionately affects First Nations communities and low-middle income countries (LMICs). Scabies is recognised by the World Health Organization as a neglected disease, causing substantial morbidity/mortality and severe secondary bacterial infections. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent years of chronic infection and community outbreaks. Current tests lack sensitivity, highlighting the urgent need for a rapid, accurate test suitable for deployment in remote communities.

This project will improve health outcomes by developing a rapid, low-cost test to diagnose scabies and associated bacterial co-infections. It will also build manufacturing capability of high-quality point-of-care diagnostics in Australia.
